The Wrecked Reputation of Millennial Drivers

Insurance companies track drivers based on many different aspects, including drivers’ ages, and on average, millennials tend to be more of a risk on the road than other generations. While this particular generation has been blamed for many faults and problems, their driving records show that they do tend to be less careful on the roads.

According to a study conducted by the AAA, drivers between the ages of 19 and 24 (part of the millennial generation) are less safe drivers than younger teenagers who are new behind the wheel. There are several factors examined to make this determination. In the event of an accident, lawyers in Las Vegas can help determine important details about the case.

Primary Factors

While accidents are an important factor, there are several other factors that contributed to this final determination. Millennials were actually more likely to commit the following safety violations than any other age group:

  • Speeding at rates in excess of 10 miles an hour
  • Run red lines instead of stopping as the light turned yellow
  • Texting while driving
  • Driving while under the influence of marijuana

Based on this, it appears that millennials are more accepting of driving behaviors that have proven to be dangerous. However, it should be noted that younger drivers are still more likely to be in fatal car accidents.

Survey Admission

As the report was based on a survey, it is possible that millennials were more honest than other age groups in their dangerous behavior. With 88% of millennials saying that they are guilty of at least one of these dangerous driving behaviors, 69% of younger drivers admitted to the same kind of driving habits. That figure may go up over time as the younger drivers become more honest or more accustomed to driving.

Other Findings

The report from the survey offered a few other interesting findings about millennials compared to other driving age groups.

  • A millennial driver is over 1.5 times more likely to read texts or emails while driving.
  • A millennial is more than twice as likely to have sent a text or email while driving.
  • They are nearly 1.5 times more likely to speed in excess of 10 mph within residential areas.
  • They are more than twice as likely than other drivers to speed in school zones.

Reckless driving is dangerous, and lawyers in Las Vegas can help.
