Dangerous and Defective Toys are a Growing Concern

The Consumer Product Safety Commission regulates the safety of children’s toys in the U.S. Toy manufacturers are expected to follow safety standards and regulations to prevent accidents and injuries, however, a personal injury attorney Las Vegas sees many injuries that are caused by dangerous and defective toys.

Safety Standards and Regulations

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has some the strictest toy safety regulations in the world. Safety standards and specifications cover a broad variety of toys and address many types of potential hazards including small parts that create choking hazards, coatings that contain toxic chemicals, moving parts that cause lacerations and fractures, and stuffed toys that cause suffocation.

Companies and individuals that make and sell toys in the U.S. must comply with all applicable safety standards and regulations regarding production, testing and shipping. The safety of toys produced in other countries presents a major safety concern for U.S. consumers. In Nevada, imported, unregulated toys are responsible for many child injuries and fatalities seen by a personal injury attorney Las Vegas each year.

Adult Responsibilities for Toy Safety

A non-profit organization called W.A.T.C.H., World Against Toys Causing Harm, publishes a list of the “10 Worst Toys”each year before the holiday season. Dangerous and defective toys on the list are rated by potential for serious injury and death. Adults should avoid buying toys on this list, as well as taking other steps to keep children safe. Parents and other adults should pay close attention to user’s manuals and warnings on toy packaging and consider the age, physical abilities, and maturity level of the child. Here are some helpful buying tips:

  • Check age recommendations shown on packaging. Toy manufacturers determine age recommendations based on toy safety factors, not child intelligence.
  • Purchase toys that are larger than the child’s mouth to prevent choking hazards, especially if the toys have small parts.
  • Make sure that plastic toys are sturdy and durable. Plastic toys that break or crack can have razor sharp edges capable of inflicting cuts and puncture wounds.
  • Avoid toys that propel small objects with great force. These toys act as projectiles that can cause permanent eye injuries and blindness.
  • Avoid toys with loud noises, especially for young children. Loud toys are capable of causing permanent hearing loss.
  • Only purchase science, electrical and chemistry sets for older children and provide close supervision when in use. These products can explode or catch fire and cause serious burns.
