The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has published its 2018 list of the most dangerous and safest cars on the road. Drivers and those in the market for a new vehicle can utilize the data from this list to make better purchasing choices. By choosing a car that ranks well, drivers can minimize the risk of serious injuries in an accident.

Seven Deadliest Vehicles for 2018

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, seven vehicles won the title of “most dangerous” in 2017 and early 2018. The Hyundai Accent was the most dangerous, followed by:

  • Kia Rio
  • Toyota Scion tC
  • Chevrolet Spark
  • Nissan Versa
  • Ford Fiesta
  • Kia Soul

All seven of these vehicles had high rates of driver fatality when involved in an accident. The first three on the list each had a rate of around 100 driver deaths per million registered vehicle years.

Smaller Vehicles Lead the Most Dangerous List

Of the top seven deadliest cars in the 2018 list, all seven were labeled as either mini or small cars. In general, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that four-door minicars had an average rate of 87 driver deaths per million registered vehicles. Even cars that do not have manufacturer’s defects or poor designs, if they are extremely small, are typically more dangerous.

Which Cars Are Safest?

In contrast, four-wheel drive luxury SUVs were found among the safest vehicles on the road, but some sedans also made the list of safest vehicles. Among those listed as the safest were these the Kia Forte and Kia Soul. The Genesis G80, Genesis G90, and the Hyundai Santa Fe came in close behind. The Subaru Outback and Subaru Legacy also made the list.

These vehicles had a rate, on average, of six driver deaths per million registered vehicles. In other words, the small minicars were 15 times more deadly and dangerous than the larger SUV vehicles. While a personal injury lawyer can help families hurt and grieving after a car crash, choosing a safer car and driving safely can reduce the risk of serious injuries in the first place. Using the information published in this report, drivers can avoid purchasing vehicles that put themselves and their passengers at risk.
